Grace Xia, former senior director of corporate strategy and development at Tencent, has joined Jungle Ventures’ investment team as a Principal. This strategic hire will complement the firm’s position as a leading VC fund in Southeast Asia and India.
Jungle Venture is currently backed by leading family offices and institutions including Temasek, IFC and recently added Mr Ratan Tata, Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons India as a Special Advisor. In December 2016, the firm closed its second fund at US$100m. The appointment of Tencent’s Grace Xia will help to strengthen the firm’s presence in China.
At Tencent, Grace focused on identifying strategic opportunities in emerging markets, building Tencent’s overseas product ecosystem and deploying capital. Her latest initiative at Tencent was a US$19m investment and joint venture with Thailand based Ookbee.
“I’m excited to join the Jungle Ventures team at a time of exponential growth of SEA’s digital economy and rising middle class in major cities across the region. As an investor we have the opportunity to back startups that can touch hundreds of millions of people’s lives,” said Grace Xia.
A Kauffman fellow, Grace has over a decade of experience in investment, corporate strategy and business development across early-stage startups and Fortune 500 companies. Her experience spans technology sectors in both Silicon Valley and emerging markets in Asia.
“We are extremely happy to have Grace join the Jungle team as she brings insights and resources that are invaluable in identifying unique investment opportunities, as well as helping our portfolio companies grow, ” said Amit Anand, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Jungle Ventures.
Southeast Asia has seen an increased interest and investment from Chinese corporates in Southeast Asian startups with over US$ 3.27 billion invested in the region over the past two years. “We’re committed to investing in talent and building the leading investment platform in the region – we believe that Grace will be an asset in helping us realise that vision especially as the region looks to collaborate more deeply with the Chinese tech ecosystem,” added David Gowdey, Managing Partner of Jungle Ventures.
“I’m looking forward to investing in extraordinary entrepreneurs who solve local market challenges with innovative technology and business model. I am also excited to work with our portfolio companies or Chinese tech companies and help maximise on the cross border opportunity between Southeast Asia and China,” summed up Grace Xia, Principal, Jungle Ventures.
